Reader Steven Harris is trying to do the right thing by his family, but technical barriers prevent it. He writes:Over the holidays I took your advice to by offering my services to my sister. She has an older MacBook Pro running Leopard and wants to upgrade to Snow Leopard (she needs Rosetta to run older PowerPC software). Three problems: Her DVD drive is broken, I have a MacBook Air without a DVD drive, and I have only a disk image of Snow Leopard. When I place that disk image on her MacBook, mount it, and try to run the Snow Leopard installer, I’m told I need to burn it to disc, which isn’t an option.
What do I do?I’m afraid you’re another casualty of the who-needs-media-drives-any-more campaign. While it’s true that SuperDrives are becoming less necessary for many people, there are occasions when a built-in drive is a godsend. This is one such case. Fortunately, there’s a workaround more convenient that purchasing an external DVD drive and a 5-pack of double-sided writeable DVD media. It goes like this:Dig up a 16GB-or-larger USB key drive.
Jack it into your MacBook Air and launch Disk Utility (found in /Applications/Utilities). In Disk Utility select the key drive, click on the Erase tab, and from the Format pop-up menu choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Click Erase to format the key drive.Double-click on the installer disk image to mount it. (I've seen instances when, if you don’t mount the image, the following technique results in an error.)Once you’re formatted the drive, click Disk Utility’s Restore tab.
Into the Source field drag the disk image of your Snow Leopard installer (likely called Mac OS X Install DVD.dmg). Now drag the mounted key drive to the Destination field. Click the window’s Restore button and in the sheet that appears click on Erase. Enter your password when prompted and click OK. The image will be copied to the key drive. (This took about 49 minutes with my 2012 MacBook Air.) Configuring Disk UtilityWhen the job is done, unmount the key drive from your Mac and plug it into your sister’s MacBook Pro.
Restart her Mac and hold down the Option key when the Mac shows signs of life. In the startup window that eventually appears, select the key drive to boot from. The Mac will boot into the Snow Leopard installer.
Proceed with the installation.
Hi All.I have a MACBOOKPRO 17' Intel.The specs areIntel Core 2 Duo 2.66 GHz Processor1GB 667MHZ RAM120 GB HDD256MB ATI Grafix Card.I have a.DMG file of 6.31GB, which is an installation DVD of Snow Leopard 10.6 Operating System.I am trying to install this on my Macbook PRO that is running 10.4.11 Tiger.When i mount this image, it says the normal Installation Window. When Click on Install Mac OS X it asks me to restart. But after restart nothing happens.I have tried using the Disk Utility, tried to restore from the source to My Disk. But it says it is not permitted.Please help. Very UrgentThank You. You can't restore the dmg to the hard drive.
The dmg has to be restored to different media so that your computer can boot from the different media and install on the hard drive. You have in effect erased your hard drive and changed it into an install disk for another computer.As set out above, what you needed to do is to restore the dmg file to a double sided DVD so you could boot from the DVD.At this point, unless you have another Mac to use to restore the disk image to a DVD or a thumb drive, you are going to have to go out and buy an OS 10.6 install DVD and re-install your system from that. I restored the contents of the.dmg file to my 'My Disk' and restarted the Mac.What do you mean by restoring the content to your drive? If you used Disk Utility to restore, it will wipe everything on your drive to factory setting. Hope not.Here is the manual for Snow Leopard installIf you don't care about content of your drive, just boot into your DVD (try press C key down), and just double click on the Install Mac OS X icon.If it didn't boot, then either your disc image was no good, or it was not a bootable image, or even not a generic snow leopard DVD installer disk.

But i have a.dmg which i want to burn the contents on a DVD. When i created as per the steps in the link that you have given as below.1. Insert the DVD/CD - I Inserted the Blank DVD2. Open Disk Utility, and select the DVD/CD from the left side list (select the DVD/CD icon on top)3.
From the DU File menu select New Disk Image from Disk 14. Choose to format the disk image as DVD/CD Master, name the disk image and click Save5. When the.cdr file is finished select it with mouse and press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info and check the box to lock the file6.
Choose the.cdr file from the left side list, click Burn, and insert a new, blank DVD or CD.This.cdr file is 0KB.Now i am trying to mount that.DMG File and open DU, then Click on the left side 'Mac OS Install DVD'then Click New Image, select as DVD/CD Master. Save it in Documents. Then will Burn. Please tell if this will work.@mac guru - As u said it did restore the contents.
But after that i wasnt able to boot. So i did a fresh install of OS 10.4 and again trying to install snow leopard.
It would be easy enough to buy the CD, but i will miss the things that i am learning, basically i have to teach and answer the silly questions of my students, so this way is real good.Thank You.
